Pour saisir toute la formidable puissance des images, voici deux essais, l'un de 1931, l'autre de 1934, consacrés à la photographie. Le premier en brosse l'histoire critique, le second s'attarde sur une photo qui obsédait Walter Benjamin : un portrait de Kafka enfant. D'une érudition immense et ludique, parfois sensuels et poétiques, ils proposent deux concepts cruciaux : celui d'aura, sur lequel repose toute la théorie esthétique du philosophe et qui sera développé plus tard dans L'OEuvre d'art à l'époque de sa reproductibilité technique ; et celui d'inconscient optique, ce « quelque chose » que nous captons sans le savoir en prenant une photographie, grâce à quoi l'on perçoit que si les images peuvent nous parler, c'est aussi parce que nous projetons en chacune d'elles ce que nous avons de plus intime.
