Voici les plus vieilles histoires du monde. Plus vieilles que tout ce qu'on trouve dans la Bible, ou dans Homère, ou dans les poèmes épiques de l'Inde. Elles ont été composées sur des tablettes de terre cuite, il y a près de quatre mille ans, par des peuples qui habitaient le Proche-Orient (Babyloniens, Assyriens, Hittites, Cananéens) et elles n'ont été retrouvées qu'à partir de la fin du XIX^e siècle, dans les ruines de leurs villes. Qu'il s'agisse des aventures de Gilgamesh, de l'histoire de Télépinou ou des contes cananéens de Baal, de l'Arc céleste ou du roi Kéret, elles ont été traduites en langue moderne à partir des documents originaux et sont d'une beauté incomparable.
Theodor H. Gaster (1906-1992), professeur de religion comparée à l'université Columbia et membre de l'Institut archéologique américain, a notamment traduit les manuscrits de la mer Morte.
