En avril 1815, près de Java, l'éruption cataclysmique du volcan Tambora a projeté dans la stratosphère un voile de poussière qui va filtrer le rayonnement solaire. Ignoré des livres d'histoire, ce bouleversement climatique fait des millions de morts. On lui doit aussi de profondes mutations culturelles, dont témoignent les ciels peints par Turner ou le Frankenstein de Mary Shelley.
L'auteur nous invite à un véritable tour du monde. Au Yunnan, les paysans meurent de faim. Dans le golfe du Bengale, l'absence de mousson entraîne une mutation redoutable du germe du choléra, dont l'épidémie gagne Moscou, Paris et la Nouvelle-Angleterre. L'Irlande connaît une effroyable famine, suivie d'une épidémie de typhus. En Suisse, des glaciers fondent brutalement, détruisant des vallées entières. Aux États-Unis, des récoltes misérables provoquent la première grande crise économique, etc.
Ce livre, qui fait le tour d'un événement à l'échelle planétaire, sonne aussi comme un avertissement : ce changement climatique meurtrier n'a pourtant été que de 2°C...
