Ellen Glasgow was born in 1873 in Richmond, Virginia, where she spent her entire life until her death in 1945. Her novel In This Our Life won the 1941 Pulitzer Prize.

Susan Goodman is Professor of English at the University of Delaware.

Ellen Glasgow's fourth novel, "The Battle-ground", was her first best-seller and presented a meditation on the South from the decade before the Confederacy to the middle of the 20th century. The book departed from the tradition of Southern romances, and has been praised for its historical accuracy.
