Mutual fund is a vehicle to mobilize moneys from investors, to invest in different markets and securities, in line with the investment objectives agreed upon, between the mutual fund and the investors. In other words, through investment in a mutual fund, a small investor can avail of professional fund management services offered by an asset management company. Mutual funds perform different roles for different constituencies. Their primary role is to assist investors in earning an income or building their wealth, by participating in the opportunities available in various securities and markets. The mutual fund industry is one of the dynamic financial investment industries with regards to speed and volume of returns. At the same time there is an element of risk in it considering that its returns are linked with the business performance of the sectors it invests in. Indian mutual fund industry is regulated by the securities and exchange board of India (SEBI). There are 47 mutual fund companies in India, with assets of 9, 04,358 crores under 950+ schemes.
