In un solo anno la fabbrica Videsi inalzata; tanto era l'ardore con cui pro cedevano i lavori, e dallo stesso pontefice Liborio, che la consacrò, come dai piu si crede, il 5 di agosto, venne in seguito appellata basilica Liberiana. Ma sem. Brando a Sisto ili troppo angusta, volle ampliarla e così fu detta Basilica Si stina. Sisto pertanto dovette costruirla a tre navate divise, come tuttodi si vede, da ben trentasei colonne di marmo pario con capitelli ionici. La basilica avea la galleria esterna all'abside e la galleria interna detta matroneo, come ha ciò ricavato da documenti l'architetto Bernich.
