Excerpt from The Altar on the Threshing-Floor: A Discourse Delivered in the First Eng. Evan. Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh, Pa., On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1857
IT is impossible, Beloved, entirely to Shake from our hearts the feeling that there are aspects in the condition of our country which would seem to make it natural that we Should sanctify this day to mourning, rather than to thanksgiving; that the people who have been summoned to a high festival of praise, should be called to the rending of their hearts, and that the ministers of the lord should weep between the perch and the altar.
