Excerpt from Träumereien an Französischen Kaminen: Märchen

Richard von volkmann, the son of Professor Alfred W. Volkmann, the physiologist, was born in Leipzig, Au gust 17, 1830. He studied at the universities of Halle, Giessen, and Berlin. A keen interest in the classics and a love for literature in general inclined him to take up the study of classical philology, but yielding to his father's wishes he devoted himself to medicine and specialized in surgery. In 1867 he became professor of surgery at Halle. He was connected with the German army during the wars of 1866 and 1870 - 71, in the latter as surgeon-general of the Fourth Army Corps. He acquired the reputation of being one of the leading authorities on surgery in Germany, and was one of the first to introduce Lister's methods into that country. He was a brilliant lecturer, and was four times called to a higher position at the University of Berlin, but his attachment to Halle was so strong that he declined these invitations. In 1885 an imperial patent raised him to the rank ot heritable nobility.
