Kurt Weyland is Mike Hogg Professor in Liberal Arts in the Department of Government at the University of Texas, Austin. His recent books include Revolution and Reaction: The Diffusion of Authoritarianism in Latin America (Cambridge, forthcoming) and Making Waves: Democratic Contention in Europe and Latin America since the Revolutions of 1848 (Cambridge, 2014).Raúl L. Madrid is Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas, Austin. He is the author of The Rise of Ethnic Politics in Latin America (Cambridge, 2012) and Retiring the State: The Politics of Pension Privatization in Latin America and Beyond (2003).
