_la pintura entre los mexicanos aborigenes es taba estrechamente ligada con su historia, y la mayor parte de los que eran pintores solo eran unos simples cronistas. Los toltecas en el Nuevo Mundo fueron los primeros de quienes se sabe que hayan usado de la pintura para consignar su his toria. Los acolhuis, lo mismo que las otras siete tribus aztecas que habían salido de la barbarie, todas la usaron con el mismo objeto. Unas veces pintaban las efigies de sus dioses, de sus reyes y hombres ilustres; otras por medio de figuras cx ponian hechos notables, los misterios de su reli gion, sus observaciones astronómicas, astrológicas y cronológicas; de manera que si nos fueran cc nocidas todas sus pinturas, poseeríamos su histo ria pórcompleto, pero desgraciadamente en la conquista se destruyeron tan preciosos archivos, y solo nos quedaron unas cuantas descripciones.
