Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fine Collection of Ancient Roman, French, Anglo-Saxon, English and Other Coins, the Property of J. A. Nexsen, Esq. Brooklyn, N. Y: Together With Several Other Collections
After each description of the ancient coins and of some of the foreign coins we have placed the valuation for the information of bidders, as we find from long experience that American collectors do not know their market value, nor have they really, means of learning the values of ancient coins and at previous sales we have received num bers of worthless bids which fail to obtain the pieces and which must only result in disappointment to the bidders.
These valuations are a just average of the value of the specimens, and collectors who desire them may safely bid more than these prices. Perhaps we should distinctly state, they are not limits, and the coins are not our property.
