Abseits vom größeren Verkehr gelegen, trugen m.-gladbach und seine Umgebung noch lange Zeit den Stempel einfacher, bäuerlicher Verhältnisse. Daher war hier die alte Bezeichnung mit einem Namen noch üblich, als in benachbarten Gegenden wie z. B. In Köln, von 1106 an die Familiennamen schon anfingen sich einzubürgern.
