En 1872 M. Belin, secrétaire - interprète et consul - général près l'ambassade de France à Constantinople, publiait dans le Contemporain une série d'études, intitulées Histoire de l'église latine à Constantinople. Ces articles furent fort re marqués alors, car on ne possédait aucun travail d'ensemble sur la matière; aussi engagea - t-on l'auteur à en faire un tirage a part. C'est ce qu'il fit, en y ajoutant de nombreuses notes complémentaires. Cette brochure fut enlevée en peu de temps, si bien que plusieurs années avant la mort de l'auteur il était impossible d'en trouver un seul exemplaire.
