Gregory a envisagé la même courbe dans sa Geomelriae pars universalis, parue en 1668, où elle est définie par une construction exprimable par l'équation et Huygens en a exposé plusieurs propriétés, parmi lesquelles sont comprises celles qui avaient été démontrées par Torricelli, dans son Discours sur la cause de la gravité, publié en 1691. Les démonstrations de ces propriétés, que Huygens n'a pas indiquées, furent données par Nicolas dans son traité De spiralibus I:gperbolicis et lineis logarithmicz's, paru en 1696, et aussi par Guido Grandi dans un ouvrage intitulé: Demonstratio theorematum Hugeuicmorum, publié en 1701.
