About the author

Nathan Selden is Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at OHSU and holds the Mario and Edith Campagna Endowed Chair of Pediatric Neurosurgery in the OHSU School of Medicine. He is also Chair-elect of the Professional Board for OHSU Healthcare. His clinical focus is functional neurosurgery for children. At OHSU, he performed the first ever transplantation of neuronal stem cells in a human patient and has three times co-authored the Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury Guidelines.

Lissa Baird is Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery and Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery in the OHSU School of Medicine. She is the Surgical Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Her clinical focus is the management of pediatric brain and spine tumors, and neurovascular malformations in children. She co-authored the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Guidelines and Pediatric Plagiocephaly Guidelines. Her research interests focus on working towards novel

treatments and a better understanding of pediatric brain tumors.

Summary

Part of the Neurosurgery by Example series, this volume on pediatric neurosurgery presents exemplary cases in which renowned authors guide readers through the assessment and planning, decision making, surgical procedure, after care, and complication management of common and uncommon disorders. As pediatric neurosurgery approximates the anatomical and pathophysiological breadth of all specialty areas of adult neurosurgery, the cases provided are exemplary of those that are more relevant to, and seen in higher frequency, in pediatrics. The cases also demonstrate presentation and management appropriate for pediatrics, as both are distinct in pediatric compared to adult neurosurgery.

Each chapter also contains 'pivot points' that illuminate changes required to manage patients in alternate or atypical situations, and pearls for accurate diagnosis, successful treatment, and effective complication management. Containing a focused review of medical evidence and expected outcomes, Pediatric Neurosurgery is appropriate for neurosurgeons who wish to learn more about a subspecialty, and those preparing for the American Board of Neurological Surgery oral examination.

Additional text

The authors present the spectrum of pediatric neurosurgery in a unique way, developing each chapter from the perspective of an individual case. Therapeutic options are considered, surgical techniques are described in detail, and postoperative management and complications are discussed. The text is likely to be a valuable resource for residents in their early years of training and for those reviewing for oral board exams.
