Robert Schumann naquit a Zwickau (saxe), le 8 juin 1810. Son père, fils d'un pasteur, protestant, avait le goût des lettres, mais il dut être employé, puis commis de librairie à Zeitz, négociant et enfin fondateur en 1808, avec son frère, d'une librairie à Zwickau, éditant des ouvrages classiques et des traductions de Walter Scott et de Byron. Il avait épousé en 1795, M° Schnabel, fille d'un médecin de Zeitz.
