« L'hystérique souffre surtout de réminiscences. »

Si Freud a découvert l'inconscient, c'est Anna O. qui a inventé la cure par la parole. La première et la plus célèbre des hystériques de la psychanalyse s'appelait en réalité Bertha Pappenheim. Elle avait 21 ans et se sentait atrocement coupable de ne pas savoir guérir son père malade. Elle voyait en hallucination des serpents, avait des absences, se cognait parfois la tête contre les murs, et oubliait sa langue maternelle. Son cas, raconté par Josef Breuer, qui fut son thérapeute de 1880 à 1882, est l'un des mythes fondateurs de la psychanalyse. S'y mêlent l'hypnose, la remémoration des souvenirs inconscients, les résistances, le transfert et la catharsis. Depuis sa publication dans les Études sur l'hystérie, il n'a cessé d'être commenté. Roman des origines, tout n'y est pas vrai, mais l'essentiel est peut-être ailleurs, dans le destin même de son héroïne, si intelligente, énergique, séduisante, qui sut changer et, par l'écriture et ses combats humanitaires et féministes, trouver sa liberté.
