E veramente, parlandosi de' tempi passati, ci volevano tutti gli aiuti umani e divini, tutti i mezzi terrestri e celesti perchè nello andare da un sito all'altro non si capitasse male. Le strade man cavano o erano impraticabili; i ladri ed i mallattori le infesta vano; e fermandosi in un posto, detto per maniera d' intendersi locanda o fondaco, mancava il necessario alla vita cominciando dal pane e finendo all' alloggio. Per mare i disagi non eran da meno dei pericoli.
