Il codice, pur troppo frammentario, delle lettere del cardinale Ottaviano degli Ubaldini, fin dal secolo XVII oggetto di studi non molto larghi e rimasti inediti di Federico Ubaldini fu più fruttuosamente messo a con tributo da due dei migliori nostri autori di storie mu nicipali, l'afib e il Savioli. Eppure nè il Potthast nè l'oesterley2 registrarono l'epistolario dell'ubaldini, nè alcuno più si era finora curato di ricercarne l'origi nale, pur esattamente indicato in quelle storie.
