Cuatrocientos años han pasado desde que Colón efec tuó su famoso viaje y llevó a Europa muchas plantas y animales raros del Nuevo Mundo. Parece que el maíz fué una de las plantas que el gran navegante presentó la reina Isabel su vuelta España. Muchos botá nicos prominentes aseguran, sin embargo, que el maíz es originario del Continente Asiático y del Archipié lago del Este.
