Während der langen byzantinischen Periode verlor die griechische Sprache durch fortdauernde Abschleifung der Wort formen und Beimischung ungriechischer Elemente ihr fruher so scharfes und lebendiges Gepräge fast bis zur Unkenntlichkeit, und es ging endlich aus ihr die Sprache des gegenwärtigen Griechen lands, die sogenannte neugriechische Sprache hervor.
