This book is the first comprehensive work summarizing the advances that have been made in the neurosurgical use of navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) over the past ten years. Having increasingly gained acceptance as a presurgical mapping modality in neurosurgery, today it is widely used for preoperative mapping of cortical motor and language function, risk stratification and improving the accuracy of subcortical fiber bundle visualization.
This unique work will provide neurosurgeons and neuroscientists who are starting their nTMS program essential and detailed information on the technique and protocols, as well as the current clinical evidence on and limitations of the various applications of nTMS. At the same time, more experienced nTMS users looking for deeper insights into nTMS mapping and treatment in neurosurgery will find clearly structured, accessible information. The book was prepared by an international mix of authors, each of which was chosen for their status as a respected expert on the respective subtopic, as evinced by their landmark publications on nTMS.

List of contents

Basic principles of nTMS.- nTMS motor mapping.- Basic principles and clinical use.- Fiber tracking.- Risk stratification.- nTMS language mapping.- Basic principles and clinical use.- Fiber tracking.- Risk stratification.- Other brain functions.- Therapeutic applications in neurosurgery.- Pain.- Paresis.- Special aspects on nTMS in children.- Outlook on the potential of nTMS.- Integration of functional data in the clinical workflow.- Methodological advantages and disadvantages of nTMS compared to MEG and fMRI.

About the author

Sandro Krieg is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eloquent brain tumors including pre- and intraoperative mapping techniques. Dr. Krieg received his medical degree from TU Munich School of Medicine. He worked during his residency at the the Department of Neurosurgery at the Technische Universität München. For his work on the application of navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation in neurosurgery he received awards of the German Academy of Neurosurgery and the Neurosurgical Research Foundation of the German Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Krieg has extensive neurophysiological experience and is a reviewer of numerous international neurosurgical but also general neuroscientific journals.

Additional text

“This is an excellent overview of a novel approach to noninvasive brain stimulation using transcranial magnetic fields. … The intended audience is neurosurgeons and neuroscientists. The book has basic information for those who are not familiar with the modality, and advanced information for its current users. Neurosurgical trainees, as well as clinicians from neighboring specialties (neurologists, physiatrists, speech therapists and electrophysiologists) may benefit from this book.” (Konstantin V. Slavin, Doody's Book Reviews, November, 2017)
