Dopo la presa e il sacco di Costantinopoli, maggio 1453, i genovesi poterono rimanere a Galata della quale vennero smantellate le mura e le torri, e vi conservarono alcuni pri vilegi coi quali mantennero per qualche tempo un vivo com mercio nel mar Nero nel quale possedevano ancora Amastri, Catia, la Tana e qualche altro castello in Crimea; mentre i ve neziani vi perdettero ogni in¿uenza politica e commerciale.
