Nella irresoluzione del tentennante vicerè, aveva il Doria insistito invano per soccorrere con suo stratagemma la piazza, ma ebbe l'onore di fare colla sua sola capitana la ricognizione delle forze navali e delle posizioni nemiche, ed a lui si dovette se lo sbarco si potè due volte effettuare. Ad Ascanio della Cornia ed a Pompeo Colonna toccò poi di ricacciare le truppe ottomane in mare.
