Sergeant Frank Hardy, late of Her Majesty's 57th Regiment of Foot, now works as a private investigator in Palmerston, New Zealand. While in Wellington to bring back a the sister of a friend, he is kidnapped and chloroformed, awaking to find himself in a tiny underground cell crawling with wetas. Circumstances force him to risk an escape, and he meets the rebel Anahera, incarcerated in the same prison. Frank must find out why he was sent to the isolated prison while staying hidden from those who want him back there. He's barefoot and on the run, but he's resourceful.
Meanwhile, Frank's partner Constable Karira and fiancee Mette Jensen have problems of their own. A man they all thought Frank had killed in self-defence appears to have returned, and he's looking for a good detective to take on his case. Missing Frank and dealing with the new client, Mette becomes increasingly upset what she's finding out about Frank's past.

Wendy M. Wilson is a retired English professor and amateur historian living in London, Canada. She was born in New Zealand and has done extensive research of the nineteenth century as background for her books. She has twice been short-listed for the Random House Fiction Award, given by the Creative Writing Program at the University of Toronto.
