Geológicamente la meseta representa una cuenca dis locada del terreno rético-cretáceo la que se apoya sobre los flancos (en su mayor parte terreno de Paganzo) de la serranía del Famatina, y de la Sierra de la Huerta, cuya continua ción hacía el Oeste y Suroeste es interrumpida por fracturas que pasan en dirección del valle de los ríos Guandacol y Ber mejo y los que han originado su desaparición.
