Excerpt from Great Britain and the Holy See, 1792-1806: A Chapter in the History of Diplomatic Relations Between England and Rome

Parliament opened at Westminster on January 22, 1794 and Mgr Erskine returned from Scotland to be presented at Court by his relative Lord Kellie. He was also taken by him to' a place near the throne in the House of Lords, to hear the King's speech on the opening of Parliament. Erskine informed the Cardinal Secretary of this in a letter, written from London on 1 7 February 1 794, which conveyed the news that the English Government intend to erect and endow a seminary for Irish Catholic priests, at a cost of pounds sterling annually.
