Summary

Philosophy beyond Socrates’ Athens aims at fostering a fresher appreciation of the philosophical importance of the so-called Socratic schools, in particular the Cynics (with particular reference to Antisthenes), Cyrenaics, Megarians, Elians and Eretrians. It covers topics in ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics and philosophy of language, and fills an important gap in scholarship by providing a systematic attempt to deal with a vast group of underestimated philosophers and ancient traditions of thought, all originating from Socrates, yet all flourishing outside Athens.
