In West Bengal, 82.16 percent of total landholdings are under marginal farmers which operate 52.47 percent of total operated land as against 67 percent of marginal farms operating only 22.5 per cent of total operated area in 2011. So, the distribution of land is relatively more equal in West Bengal compared to that of all India level. The concentration of marginal farms and their possession of more than fifty percent of the operated land make their role very significant in West Bengal agriculture. Therefore the present study of some economic aspects of marginal farms seems to be very relevant and significant particularly in the context of West Bengal agriculture.
