Flight Lieutenant Joseph Thompson, aka 'Mac', left his mother's small Birmingham home in December 1943 at the age of 18 to join the wartime RAF.

About the author

Helen Thompson lives in North Yorkshire with her large family, where she works as a photographer.

Summary

65 years after they were written, the letters between a young wartime Lancaster gunner and his mother which had been painstakingly boxed away, were re-discovered by a new generation of his family. These letters narrate, in his own words, the entire story of his time in the RAF including family, friendships, love and tragedy.
