Reading At Greater Depth in Key Stage 2

Expectations in primary English are high, particularly in reading. There is an emphasis on inference and deduction together with vocabulary development: two key elements for preparing pupils to access texts at a higher level. At the same time, there is also a change in the rhetoric around guided reading with teachers trying different pedagogies in order to fully prepare pupils for the demands of the reading curriculum. About the author

Suzanne Horton is subject leader for Primary English at the University of Worcester and teaches on a range of postgraduate and undergraduate modules. She is currently involved in the Lifelong Readers Project in cooperation with a number of European partners, funded with support from the European Commission.Louise Beattie is Senior Lecturer in Secondary English at the University of Worcester.
