In a world where magic isn't supposed to exist

It made an appearance
As soon as the book was in her hands the cover came to life again and Reitrin suppressed a scream of alarm.
Etakai and Shan looked over her shoulders at the book and both were stunned to see she hadn't been imagining things. The book truly was moving as if it were not a book, but a doorway to another world.
"What's happening?" Reitrin looked at the men on either side of her. "Why didn't it come to life when one of you touched it?"
"No idea," replied Shan distantly. He was watching the book with newfound awe. "Is this some kind of magic?"
"I heard there is no magic in the Real World," said Etakai, directing spite towards Reitrin who glared at him.
"There isn't supposed to be," she told him.
"What happens if we open it?" Kaffie wondered.
Reitrin didn't want to know, but before she could protest the idea, Etakai had already reached out and opened the book.
