About the author

ANDREWS, Ian, teaches health sociology in the School of Behavioural and Community Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. His main research interests are in the sociology of sport and social theory.
AXFORD, Rita, PhD, is a registered nurse and Professor in the Department of Nursing at Regis University in Denver, USA. Her research interests include informatics, nursing management and quality improvement.
BROWNE, Jan, PhD, is a registered nurse and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing at Deakin University. Her research interests include disability, palliative care, sexual health, and the social aspects of ageing and disability.
COULSON, Irene, PhD, is a registered nurse and a gerontologist and an Adjunct Associated Professor in the School of Health at the University of New England. Her research interest include health policy, aged care, evaluation of health care services, and dementia care.
CRUICKSHANK, Mary, PhD, is a registered nurse and Senior Lecturer in the School of Health at the University of New England. Her current research interests include quality management in nursing, palliative care issues that focus on palliative care providers and consumers, and palliative care education.
DE VAUS, David, PhD, is a family sociologist and survey researcher. Currently he is an Associate Professor at La Trobe University and Senior Research Advisor at the Australian Institute of Family Studies.  His research interests are intergenerational family relations, retirement, life course transitions and health among older people.
GERBER, Rod, PhD, is a qualitative researcher and educator and Honorary Fellow in the School of Professional Development and Leadership at the University of New England. His research interests include workplace learning, environmental and organisational behaviour, smart workforces, and common sense in workplaces.
GRBICH, Carol, PhD, is a health sociologist and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University of South Australia. Her research includes care-giving, palliative care, aged care, and the changing role of men in society.
GREENWOOD, Ken, PhD, is a psychologist and Associate Professor in the School of Psychological Science at La Trobe University. His research interests include sleep disturbance, problems of adaptation to shiftwork, and the analysis of single case data.
HARRIS, Lynne, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Behavioural and Community Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. Her main research interest are memory, attention, anxiety, and depression.
HAYS, Terrence, PhD, is a music educator and Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of New England. His research interests include mentorship, music education, sexuality and ageing and music in the lives of older people.
HEARD, Robert, PhD, is a psychologist and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Behavioural and Community Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. His current research interests are rehabilitation of patients following strokes, assessment of the needs of intellectually handicapped parents, visual standards in driving, and the relationship between standard clinical phobias and irrational prejudices against minority groups.
HOUGH, Michael, PhD, is a psychologist and a Lecturer in the School of Behavioural and Community Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. His research interest include fantasy-prone personality, prejudice, religion and health, coping and pain perception.
IRWIN, Lyn, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health at the University of New England. Her research interest include HIV/AIDS policy and health care systems.
