La Fausse Suivante est sans doute la comédie la plus singulière de son auteur : non seulement elle s'organise autour de l'échec et non de la réussite d'une intrigue amoureuse, mais elle s'écarte délibérément aussi de cette « éternelle surprise de l'amour » qui, selon D'Alembert, serait le « sujet unique » du théâtre de Marivaux.
En décidant de se travestir en homme pour déterminer la valeur de l'époux (Lélio) que son beau-frère a trouvé pour elle, la fausse suivante accède, en effet, à un univers cynique de prédateurs qui méprisent les femmes et ne voient en elles que leur dot, leur fortune, et éventuellement leur corps. Renversant le topos du loup dans la bergerie, la pièce introduit parmi les loups une tendre brebis, non sans l'avoir préalablement dotée de la ruse du renard. Virtuose du simulacre, la fausse suivante accomplit sa mission avec une maestria éblouissante et féroce. Véritable allégorie de la comédie, elle en exalte les pouvoirs, jusqu'au vertige.
