Eine gerichtete Strecke die die relative Lage zweier beliebiger Raumpunkte P" P, festlegt, ist ein Vektor, denn sie wird durch ihre Richtung von PI nach P, und durch ihre Länge PI P, vollständig bestimmt. Der Punkt PI heißt Anfangspunkt, der Punkt P, End punkt des Vektors. Dabei ist die absolute Lage des Anfangspunktes ganz willkürlich; haben zwei Punktpaare P" P, und P,' dieselbe relative Lage, so wird diese Lage durch den selben Vektor bestimmt (fig. Zwei Vek P: toren gelten also nicht als verschieden, wenn sie sich durch bloße Parallelverschiebung zur Deckung bringen lassen.
