Excerpt from The American

It was a quiet hour at the settlement. Not a sound disturbed the writer in one room or the reader in the other until a burly policeman came puffing and panting up the entrance steps and stopped at the office door. At the first sound of the sergeant 's heavy tread Miss Seymour had glanced involuntarily, with an anxious frown, toward the library; and though she could not see the reader in the bay-window, there had come, also at that first sound, a quick call All right, Miss Sey mour,' and the reader had vanished.

Miss Seymour turned to greet her visitor with a bright smile and a pleasant, Good-morning, Sergeant.
