Excerpt from Devonshire Illustrated in a Series of Views, of Cities, Towns, Public Buildings, Streets, Docks, Churches, Antiquities, Abbeys, Picturesque Scenery, Castles, Seats of the Nobility, &C. &C

Among the more ancient edifices Of this county, there are many which may challenge comparison with any district in the kingdom and of those Of modern construction, Plymouth and Devonport alone furnish examples, which vie, in importance and elegance, with the esteemed productions Of the classic ages. To record, in perpetuity, by the Graphic art, a series of the choicest Views which Devonshire exhibits, was the chief design of the Proprietors Of this Work and they determined that the style Of its embellishments, and its low price, should be such as to render it generally acceptable to the Public. It was commenced in good faith, and in its progress there has been no deterioration. The artists have achieved both honour for themselves and credit for their employers.

In respect to the Historical and Descriptive Accounts which accompany the Views, the Authors have been anxious to render them strictly just and appropriate and they now, on the completion of their task, return their grateful acknowledgments to the several Correspondents who aided them with assistance and information.
