Excerpt from Drei Kleine Lustspiele: Edited With an Instruction and Notes
All of these plays are well suited for school exhibitions and for amateur acting. With this in view I have occasion ally supplemented the stage directions, which are usuallyample, by notes suggesting accent or manner of delivery. In general, however, the notes are intended to meet the needs of students in their second or third school term who are provided with one Of the ordinary School dictionaries. Throughout I have tried to suggest the spirit of the speakers rather than the historic signification of their words. For that the student should consult his dictionary. Therefore I have rendered slang by slang, colloquial German by col loquial English. I have endeavored also to explain all literary and historical allusions and all social customs that might seem peculiar to persons acquainted only with Amer ican usage. Since the notes are meant to be read in con nection with the text they are made as laconic as possible. Difi'useness is nowhere more out of place than in notes. Brev ity is the soul of annotation.
