Provisional restoration is designed to enhance aesthetics, stabilization and/or function for a limited period of time, after which it is to be replaced by a definitive dental or maxillofacial prosthesis. The terms provisional, interim, or transitional may be used interchangeably The provisional restoration serves as the prototype for the definitive that influences the dynamics of the treatment planning procedure. Properly designed and maintained provisional restoration enhances the prognosis of the definitive restoration. Provisional fixed prosthodontic appliances are used for protection of prepared full or partial coverage abutments that are to receive definitive fixed prosthodontic restorations. In addition they are used to establish a harmonious occlusion, both intraarch and interarch as well as for the establishment of esthetic guidelines for the definitive fixed restorations. Provisional restorations must provide an environment conducive to maintenance of periodontal health.
