This book addresses biometrics from a biomedical engineering point of view. Divided into five sections, it discusses topics including the influence of pathologies on various biometric modalities (e.g. face, iris, fingerprint), medical and security biometrics, behavioural biometrics, instrumentation, wearable technologies and imaging. The final chapters also present a number of case studies.

The book is suitable for advanced graduate and postgraduate students, engineers and researchers, especially those in signal and image processing, biometrics, and biomedical engineering.

List of contents

Introduction to Biometrics in clinical environment.- Newborn footprint identification.- Newborn Palmprint identification.- Face recognition in healthcare .- Fingerprint in healthcare.- Face Recognition and plastic surgery.- Effect of ageing on face analysis.- Face Ageing under health and behavioral conditions.-Iris Recognition by considering pathological cases.- Influence of skin disease on fingerprints.- Veins Pathologies in biometrics.

About the author

Professor Amine NAIT-ALI was born in 1972. In 1994 he received his M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering “Ingénieur d’état en électronique” from the university USTO (Oran), then his DEA degree “Diplôme des Etudes Approfondies” in Signal Processing and Automatic from the University Paris XI (1995). In 1998, he received his Ph.D. degree in Biosignal Processing and the “Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches” (HDR) from the University Paris XII, in 2007. He was an Associate Professor and is currently a Full Professor at the same university. His research interests are focused on biosignal processing, biometrics, optimization, modeling and medical signal and image compression. He has co-authored a number of international peer-reviewed papers and edited and co-edited five books in the biomedical and biometrics field (Springer, ISTE-Wiley and Hermes). He has organized and/or run several national, European and international workshops, and serves as General Chair of the International Conference of Bio-engineering for Smart Technologies (BioSMART).  He also served as a reviewer for IEEE Transaction on Biomedical Engineering, EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, Biomedical Signal Processing and Control and Digital Signal Processing. Prof. Amine NAIT-ALI is a member of IEEE, SFGBM, GDR ISIS and STIC-Santé and, he is the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Society representative in the IEEE Biometrics Council.
