Je nachdem eine Locomotive einem der oben genannten Zwecke genügen soll, wird auch ihr Unterbau eine entsprechende Gestalt an nehmen müssen.
Wir setzen eine Locomotive voraus mit beliebig vielen z. B. N Trieb axen, d. H. Solchen, an welche die von den Maschinen ausgehende Kraft, sei es direct durch die Schubstange, sei es durch Kupplungsstangen an greift, so ist die Anzahl der Triebräder gleich 2n.
