Amina is a little girl who lives in a city called Minneapolis with her mom, dad, and baby brother, Alfie. Amina is a very happy girl. She loves her family and mathematics. But recently things have changed at school. Some of her schoolmates have started to say and do mean things to Amina and some of her friends because they are "different." It has been making Amina very sad. Luckily, Amina has a mom who reminds her that she and her friends are wonderful, just as they are.

About the author

My name is Dubie. I was born and raised in Norway with roots in Ghana and England. I created this book to address the issues that face minority background children. We hope this book will remind young people that they are not alone. We want to provide examples of people who have shown vulnerability and resilience in the face of prejudice, but have not been reduced by it. A reminder that our differences are not points of division, but rather seeds of togetherness.

My name is Samuel Fleming. I am an artist born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. I have been drawing since I was 2 years old. Creativity and trying new things have always been a core part of my identity; from building basketball-themed apps, Dunnk, in the IOS app store to creating my own clothing brand--Phillip Park. The subject matter of my work is that of black America in both realistic and grotesque styles. I want to use the artwork in this book as a way to see a person as a human being first instead of a particular demographic.
