Le potassium a été découvert par H. Davy, en 1807: en traitant un fragment de potasse humectée par un courant électrique il vit se former, au pôle négatif de petits globules brillants ressemblant au mercure qui brûlaient dès qu'ils étaient produits; ces globules étaient le métal de la pousse.
