Excerpt from Drei Kleine Lustspiele: Edited With an Introduction and Notes

OF the three little plays in this volume, the first and second are by Roderich Benedix, one of the most industri ous and popular of modern German playwrights. He was born in Leipzig in 1811, and died in 1873, after a wander ing and versatile career in which he had been by turns or together, actor, opera singer, dramatic author, theatrical manager, and editor of a literary journal. His complete dramatic works in twenty-seven small volumes were pub lished at irregular intervals from 1846 to 1874, and a selec tion from them has since been reprinted in a cheap and popular edition, while forty-six of his little comedies and monologues have been collected in the two volumes of his From this the present plays are taken with such changes only as are necessary to make them corre spond with the received standard Prussian orthography, which is seldom or never consistently employed by Ger man dramatic publishers.
