Excerpt from General Aims of the Teacher and Form Management: Two Lectures Delivered in the University of Cambridge in the Lent Term, 1883

I. When any of you find yourselves in the position which fell to my lot thirty years ago - the position of being suddenly set down to teach a large form of boys, some of whom are only a few years younger than yourselves; boys inclined to fun, perhaps even to mischief, perhaps even to turbulence, - almost the first qualification which I should postulate, would be a sense of t/ie z'mporfame, ibe t/ze sacredness of your task. If a teacher is wholly unimpressed by the sense of this sacredness, - an impression which may remain with him, not as a burden, but as an inspiration even in his lightest hours,-i do not think that he will ever make a perfect teacher. The teacher's hand must always be on the tiller, but, if he would steer aright, his eve must ever be on the directing star. His task is sacred, for two reasons one, the transcendent importance of the results which it pro duces the other, the rapidity and intensity of the in¿uences which tend to those results.
