William tore along the platform of the suburban station with a newspaper streaming in his hand, while angry or encouraging shouts were hurled at him from several points by of ficials; bounded upon the step of the slowly moving train; and was pitched forward into the carriage by a brace of porters who stood ready. The door was slammed; William picked himself off the knees and toes of the other passengers, and gathered his hat from the ¿oor at the far end of the carriage where it had rebounded from the nose of a lady in the corner. Then he sat down, opened his newspaper, and glancing round on faces ¿ushed With pain and indignation: That was a close shave, he observed genially.
