Scatenauge (l. Scadenauge) hat nichts mit dem angelsächsischen S_q_edenig zu thun, wie Heinrich Leo (über Beowulf S. 49) gewollt hat; denn der zweite Teil des Wortes (auge), der zu dieser Annahme den Anlass gegeben, steht für augea oder augia, welches in lateinischen, auf althochdeutschem Sprach gebiet geschriebenen Quellen fast stets für ahd. Owiiiqqd, got. Avi gebraucht wird. So heisst z. B. Die Stadt Aue (reichenau) in einheimischen Berichten meist Augia. Vgl. Auch Grimm, Geschichte der deutschen Sprache 726, und weiter unten.
