The world's largest rice crop of 1967-68 (august-july) l/ is expected to surpass the previous record harvest of 1964-65 by 4 percent, according to the first estimate of the Foreign Agricultural Service. Growers worldwide increased rice acreage and expect to harvest record yields per acre due to generally favorable weather and further use of improved cultivation methods.
World production of rough rice in 1967-68 is forecast at a record 179 million metric tons, up 10 percent from the reduced crop of 1966 - 67. The previous largest harvest in 1964 - 65 amounted to 171.4.million tons (revised), and production during the 5 years ended 1964-65 averaged 160 million tons a year.
Prospective world acreage in rice, forecast at 235 million acres, is percent above a year ago and 2 percent more than the previous largest acreage of 230 million acres in 1964 - 65. With prospective increases in all continents, the largest land increases were planned in Asia and South America, while the USSR and Eastern Europe have the largest percentage gains in acreage.
