Maurice Loir ne serait pas complète et ne donnerait pas entière satisfaction à notre curiosité s'il ne nous montrait pas par quelles transformations les nefs des croisés sont devenues les navires de haut bord, vaisseaux, frégates, corvettes ou bricks, qui cédèrent il yi a vingt ans la place aux navires bardés de fer dont les progrès de la science ont fait les cuirassés géants de nos jours; et si, en regard de ces transformations du matériel naval, il ne nous montrait pas par contre la persistance du caractère, des traditions d'honneur et de discipline du marin lui-meme. C'est ce qu'il fait en quelques chapitres intéressants, où il rappelle toutes les actions héroïques.
