Excerpt from Language and Languages: Being "Chapters on Language" And "Families of Speech"
This book is a reprint of my C/zaplers on Language and Families of Speak - of which the former was written in defence of the theory of Onomatopoeia as the only discovered or discoverable basis of language, and the latter was composed of Lectures delivered before the Royal Institution. Both works have passed through several editions, and the con tinned demand for them shows that they have been found useful by students of the young and intensely interesting Science of Language. Subsequent study during the eleven years which have elapsed since their first publication would have enabled me to add largely to what I have here written on the subject, but it has not rendered necessary the alteration of a single material fact; and as both parts of the book in their original form were fortunate enough to receive the approval of very high authorities, I have felt justified in accepting the suggestion of the Publishers that they should now be republished in a single volume.
